5 Star Safety Awards

The annual 5 Star Safety Awards celebrate the 5 Star Safety Certified properties that go above and beyond to be a champion of increased community safety.

  • Did your property prioritize the safety of your residents and launch a new safety initiative?
  • Do you have a team member who saved the day or helped prevent a potentially dangerous situation?
  • Maybe you threw an AMAzing Project S.A.F.E. event that deserves to be recognized!

Tell us all about it when you submit your Final Application for 5 Star! When you submit your Final Application, you will have the option to enter into the 5 Star Safety Awards. Entries are completely free, and you may enter into as many of the below categories as you would like. The Awards will be held at an AMA Dinner Meeting of the following year (typically in February). There are separate competitions and award ceremonies for Phoenix and Tucson and their respective surrounding areas.

Eligibility:

  • The property you are enrolling under must be an active AMA member.
  • Property must have enrolled in the current year's AMA 5 Star Safety Program and completed all of the necessary requirements for certification or renewal.
  • All dues and registration fees must be paid.

Category Descriptions:

This award recognizes the property that came up with a creative and effective safety solution or campaign. 

Aspects considered during judging are:

  • What safety concern did the initiative address?
  • Impact of initiative on residents, staff, and/or surrounding community
  • Ingenuity of the initiative
  • Team member participation/engagement
  • Option to include copies of any marketing/literature created and distributed
  • Option to include any photographs that represent your initiative

Required at time of application: Short answer questionnaire 

Do you have a team member who saved the day or helped prevent a potentially dangerous situation? This award is given to recognize an individual team member who has gone above and beyond to improve safety at your property.

Aspects considered during judging are:

  • Example of individual's commitment to safety
  • How does their commitment go above and beyond?
  • Impact of their commitment to safety on residents, staff, and/or surrounding community
  • Option to include any photographs that highlight why your team member is a Safety Champion

Required at time of application: Short answer questionnaire

This award is given to the property that has fostered a strong safety culture through positive behaviors, proactive measures, and a demonstrated commitment to safety. 

Aspects considered during judging are:

  • What sets your property apart as having an excellent safety culture?
  • Do all members of your team support a culture of safety? How?
  • How do you measure safety at your property?
  • How does your safety culture impact your residents, staff, and/or surrounding community?
  • Option to include copies of any marketing/literature created and distributed
  • Option to include any photographs that highlight your property's safety culture

Required at time of application: Short answer questionnaire

This award recognizes the property that had the best resident turnout at the Project S.A.F.E. event they held as a requirement of the 5 Star Safety Certification Program. Winners are determined by calculating the percentage of units that are represented at the event out of the total number of units on the property. The percentage is based on the information submitted on the sign-in sheet for the event.

Required at time of application: Copy of sign-in sheet that includes unit numbers

This award is about building safer communities by engaging the surrounding businesses and service providers. This award recognizes the property that had the largest number of neighborhood partners attend the Project S.A.F.E. event they held as a requirement of the 5 Star Safety Certification Program. Neighborhood partners may include, but are not limited to local businesses, neighborhood watch groups, community sports programs, local non-profits, police and fire departments, neighboring apartment communities, etc. (Neighborhood partners should be a business or provider that your residents could potentially have direct relationships/interactions with. Please do not use your Industry Partners.) Community participation is verified via your event sign-in sheet and photos. 

Aspects considered during judging are:

  • Were the community partners invited relevant to your residents? Why/how?
  • Did the community partners invited provide any useful information and/or services for your residents?
  • Option to include any photographs that highlight the community participation at your event

Required at time of application: Short answer questionnaire, with copy of your event sign-in sheet that includes names of individuals and companies in attendance

This award recognizes the property with the most creative or innovative theme for the Project S.A.F.E. event they held as a requirement of the 5 Star Safety Certification program. (Please note that "Theme" is different than "Topic". For example, if "Pool Safety" is the topic, "Luau" could be the theme. If "Fire Safety" is the topic, "Stop, Drop, and Roll" could be the theme.) 

Aspects considered during judging are:

  • Does the theme make sense with the selected safety topic?
  • Is the theme incorporated into invitations, decorations, activities, food, etc?
  • Is the theme relevant to your residents' needs and/or interests?
  • Is the theme unique?
  • Option to include copies of any marketing/literature created and distributed
  • Option to include any photographs that highlight the use of your theme

Required at time of application: Short answer questionnaire and copy of your event invitation(s)

This award recognizes the property with the most creative invitation or series of invitations used to invite residents to the Project S.A.F.E. event they held as a requirement of the 5 Star Safety Certification Program. Invitations must indicate that the event is a Project  S.A.F.E. event, highlight the safety topic of the event, and include the AMA 5 Star or Project S.A.F.E. logo.

Additional aspects considered during judging are:

  • Originality of invitation
  • Does the invitation incorporate your selected safety topic?
  • Does the invitation incorporate your selected theme?
  • Did you send out more than one type of invitation, i.e., "Save the Date", traditional invitation, flyer posting, door-hangs, e-mail invitation, social media post, videos, newsletter announcement, etc.
  • Is it clear that your event is a safety social?
  • Are all of the details of your event clear? I.e., is it clear when and where your event will be happening?
  • Option to include copies of any invitations created and distributed

Required at time of application: Copy of invitation(s)

This award recognizes the property that held the best overall Project S.A.F.E. event as a requirement of the 5 Star Safety Certification Program. Winners will have excelled in resident turnout, community participation, come up with a unique theme, and sent out multiple forms of creative invitations.

Additional aspects considered during judging are:

  • Event originality
  • Was there anything that made your event extra special?
  • Did the invitation, topic and theme all fit together?
  • Was it clear that the event was a safety social?
  • How were residents engaged? I.e., speakers, activities, food, etc.
  • Did multiple people from your property team participate?
  • Did residents provide testimonials?
  • Did the event appeal to a variety of demographics?
  • Was the safety topic selected relevant to the needs of your community? Why/how?
  • What did your residents learn about safety?
  • Did the event make a positive impact on the surrounding community?
  • Did the property post photos or videos from the event on social media?
  • Option to include copies of any invitations/marketing/literature created and distributed
  • Option to include any photographs that demonstrate why your property should be chosen for Committee's Choice

Required at time of application: Short answer questionnaire, copy of sign-in sheet that includes unit numbers and participating partners, and copies of invitation(s)
